The process of remediation may be initiation for the cases when the initial phases of the environmental assessment result in documented contamination of the environmental media, primary soil and groundwater. Remediation activities enables the quality of the contaminated media to be ensured at the level before the contamination emerged i.e. at the level prescribed by the legislation. Through the Decree on limit values of polluting, harmful and hazardous substances in soil (Official gazette of RS, No. 30/18), national legislation on management with contaminated sites introduce the triggers for initiation of remediation activities i.e. for development of the Remediation Designs.

Identification of the adequate remediation methods is conditioned by the numerous factors, primary with the type, size and extend of the contamination plume and with the type of contaminated media, being in detail developed through the Remediation Design. Remediation Designs are developed respecting the legislation requirements prescribed through the national Regulation on methodology for preparation of the remediation designs (Official gazette of RS, No. 74/15).
